OpenAI’s confirmation that it is evaluating Mexico as a possible site for a new data center marks another step in the country’s gradual ascent as a digital infrastructure hub in Latin America. The facility, if built, would support the company’s growing AI workloads—such as those powering ChatGPT—by providing regional computing and storage capacity. It reflects a broader trend among technology firms to localize data processing closer to end users to reduce latency and improve performance.
Mexico offers several advantages for such an investment. Its geographic proximity to the United States makes it an attractive nearshoring destination for hyperscale data centers, particularly those serving North American markets. The country also benefits from relatively competitive electricity costs and an expanding fiber optic backbone, both essential for high-performance computing environments. Recent investments by major cloud providers suggest growing confidence in Mexico’s digital readiness.
The potential arrival of OpenAI would add momentum to this shift. A new hyperscale facility could catalyze further development in adjacent sectors such as cloud services, cybersecurity, and enterprise software. As AI applications become increasingly embedded across industries, the presence of localized infrastructure may also encourage multinational firms to base more of their digital operations in Mexico.

For companies like OpenAI, long-term commitments may hinge on greater legal clarity and institutional capacity.
Energy reliability is another critical factor. Hyperscale data centers are power-intensive operations, and while Mexico’s grid has improved, concerns persist over its ability to meet large-scale demand consistently. Political and security risk perceptions may also weigh on site selection decisions, especially for firms managing sensitive or mission-critical infrastructure.
Nonetheless, the fact that Mexico is under consideration signals its growing relevance in the global tech landscape.
