Armando Castilla Galindo, director general of Grupo Vanguardia, was detained on January 9 at Monterrey International Airport by agents of the Nuevo León state prosecutor’s office, with support from the National Guard. The stated reason for the arrest was his alleged failure to respond to a public prosecutor’s notification. However, no formal charges or judicial order have been disclosed by authorities.
Grupo Vanguardia, a regional media outlet based in Saltillo, Coahuila, denounced the detention as an orchestrated act of intimidation. In a statement, the outlet claimed that Castilla Galindo’s arrest in Monterrey—outside his place of residence—reflected ongoing surveillance and judicial harassment against its leadership. The media group has long alleged that it is the target of politically motivated legal pressure.
The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) joined the criticism, calling for Castilla Galindo’s immediate release and describing the detention as arbitrary and illegal. The organization also urged respect for legal guarantees and press freedom. As of January 10, authorities in Nuevo León have not clarified the legal basis for the operation or provided information on Castilla Galindo’s current legal status.
The lack of transparency has raised questions about due process and institutional safeguards.
The case has added to growing concerns about the use of judicial mechanisms to pressure journalists and media executives in Mexico. While violence against reporters has drawn international attention in recent years, legal harassment—particularly at the state level—has become an increasingly common tactic to constrain critical reporting.
It remains unclear whether Castilla Galindo’s detention is part of a broader investigation or an isolated procedural action. The lack of transparency has raised questions about due process and institutional safeguards. Some observers suggest that administrative disorganization may be a factor, though this does little to allay concerns about potential overreach.
Grupo Vanguardia maintains that both the outlet and its director have been subjected to a sustained campaign of judicial persecution. In its reporting on the incident, the outlet framed the arrest as evidence that political power continues to view independent journalism as a threat.
“This action demonstrates once again that press freedom is seen as an obstacle by those who hold political power,” Vanguardia stated following the arrest.
